EPO

EPO is a growth factor produced in the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells.

• The Dual Nature of EPO: While EPO is best known for its role in producing red blood cells, it also has potent tissue-protective properties. It can protect nerves and other tissues from injury, reduce inflammation, and prevent cell death.

• The Problem with Full EPO: The protective effects are mediated by a different receptor on cells than the one that controls red blood cell production. Using full EPO for its protective benefits is problematic because it also activates the “erythropoietic receptor,” leading to an increase in red blood cells, which can thicken the blood and raise the risk of dangerous clots and high blood pressure.

This discovery led researchers to engineer smaller EPO peptides that can selectively bind to the protective receptor complex without activating the erythropoietic pathway, thereby              creating a safer therapeutic profile
